SAJAMA, THE HIGHEST MOUNTAIN OF BOLIVA

SAJAMA & ACOTANGO VOLCANOES

Sajama & Acotango volcanoes

The Sajama volcano, 6,542 mts. – 21.407 ft. —name that comes from the Aymara voice “Chak-jjaña”, which means “West”— , it is a mountain located in the middle of the Bolivian plateau, with the town of Sajama located at its feet and constitutes the highest summit in Bolivia.

It has several ascent routes, but its northwestern variant is where it receives the largest number of climbers.

Although it is not a complicated route, it does require to be careful, as it has steep slopes both at the beginning and at the top, as well as some simple rock climbs.

After climbing Acotango (6.053 mts. – 19.860 ft.),  it is possible to ascend this volcano in 2-3 days starting from Sajama —small village at 4,220 mts – 13.854 ft.—, crossing a beautiful ravine up to base camp. Then, there´s a rocky slope that leads directly to the high camp, located at 5,650 – 18.536 ft. on a ridge that has a wonderful view of the Bolivian plateau.
